Membership

Are You Interested in learning about. . .

Membership at First Presbyterian Church in North Palm Beach?

Our Vision. . .

In being obedient to the Word of God, we strive to be a nurturing, caring, Christ-centered family demonstrating God’s love, so as to call people in our community and world into a personal relationship with Christ.

We want you to join with us.

Several concerns you might have about Membership:

I am not baptized. We welcome you to join and will provide you an opportunity to be baptized as it is a requirement for membership.

I belong to a different denomination other than Presbyterian. If you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior you are welcome to join.

I’ve never belonged to a church before—why should I now? Studies have shown those who publicly declared their faith in Jesus Christ to become a member of a church family will “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”  2 Peter 3:18

If I join, will I have to pledge and become involved on different committees and study groups? You are invited to find a place to participate in the life of the church, but no specific level of involvement is required.

How to get more information:

Attend a New Member/Inquirers’ Class: Announced in our bulletin or weekly e-letter. Generally meets several times a year.

Membership

You may join First Presbyterian as a full member through:

Profession of Faith – if you have never been a member of a Christian Church but wish to openly affirm your Christian faith.

Reaffirmation of Faith – if a previous membership has lapsed and you wish to renew your vows with this congregation.

Letter of Transfer – if you wish to transfer a current membership from another congregation.

Classes

All new members are asked to participate in one of the regularly scheduled membership classes.  Even for the life-long Presbyterian, participation in this class is a chance to connect with others who are new, get to know the pastors and learn about the many opportunities for fellowship, service and study that are unique to this congregation.

Membership classes are sponsored by the Fellowship Committee and are listed above.  The classes occur on a Saturday and Sunday during one weekend and cover what it means to be a Christian, what it means to be Presbyterian and what it means to be a member of First Pres in North Palm Beach.  We also hear the pastors’ personal testimonies and have time for fellowship and sharing during lunch on Saturday.  As part of the class on Sunday there is time to attend one of the adult Sunday School classes.  On Sunday,  two or three weeks after the class, the members from the Session, our governing board, will meet with the group at 10:30 am and new members will join the church during the 11:00 am service.

Our Hopes for Our Members

It is the desire of the leaders of First Pres that all who join our fellowship will find their church experience to be meaningful and rewarding.  In addition to regularly attending our weekly times of worshiping God, we also hope that members will:

Be committed to growing in their faith, knowing God more deeply

Find a meaningful place to serve the Lord through serving others

Give generously of their personal resources to support the work of the church

Pray for our ministry and the special needs of others in our church family

Becoming a member does not obligate anyone to a certain level of activity, and there are no membership dues or attendance requirements.  All members are encouraged to find the right level of involvement for themselves and their current place in life.
